It seemed like a strange concept the first time I came across this programme, a Radio show about people who have just died, however in the way that BBC Radio 4 does things they balance the content with the people from diverse areas of public life, presenting both the highs and lows of their lives and careers in an informative and authoritative way without being maudlin or sentimental. In this case it was just lovely to be reminded of the comic genius of Eric Sykes and of the great respect and love that people who worked with had for him. As always the content was informative, with insights into both the personal life and public life of the people featured with first hand testimonies from friends, colleagues and associates.
Obviously the BBC has a stack of information prepared on 100’s of people, but it always amazes me how this programme is put together so quickly, Eric Sykes died on Wednesday last week and by the broadcast on Friday this show had interviews with Bruce Forsyth, Jimmy Tarbuck, Ken Dodd and TV producer Beryl Vertue, as well as archive interviews and broadcast audio from several other people including Eric Sykes.
I would highly recommend giving this podcast a go, even if you don’t know the people featured in a particular programme there is always something of interest and something to learn.
